Fun Halloween Ideas and Activities for Kids

Pumpkins are lining the fields down at Craigies Farm which can only mean one thing… Little Farmers are lining up their broomsticks, ready for a spooktacular Halloween!

What better way to spend it than in an eerie field filled with pumpkins! We have already had a visit from plenty of little farmers for PYO pumpkins, followed by a day in Little Farmers indoor and outdoor timber play area!

Read on for some fun Halloween activity ideas that your little monsters can really get their fangs into…

Spooky activities

Pick them, carve them, scoop out their insides and mash them up!

Of course we are talking about… PUMPKINS! We have been welcoming so many of you to the farm this October to pick your own pumpkins and explore our pumpkin haybale maze.

But the fun doesn’t stop when you finish carving – make sure you make the most of this delicious orange veg by turning your leftovers into delicious meals the whole family can enjoy – like our favourite pumpkin pie recipe or aubergine, pumpkin & coconut curry – scarily good!

Who is bobbing for apples this year? It is one of our favourite Halloween games!

Before any ghoulish fun can commence the kids must fill up their cauldrons with apples!

If your cauldrons overflow, don’t be scared, you can turn the rest into sticky apple juice! Bring them to the Farm Shop counter and our friendly staff will juice them for you. Make sure to bring at least 10kg of apples to turn into juice!

Halloween crafts and treats

Mixing up the potion for these tasty Halloween Black Velvet Cupcakes will be scarily fun for your crafty little witches and wizards.

Here is what you need for the sponge…

200g butter, softened
300g golden caster sugar
200g dark chocolate, melted
2 eggs
250g self-raising flour
¼ tsp baking powder mixed with 100ml boiling water
50g cocoa powder
200ml milk
1-2 tsp black food colouring

For the buttercream…

300g unsalted butter, softened
500g icing sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
black food colouring

Start by heating the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and line two 12-hole cupcake tins with cases. Beat the butter and sugar until the mixture is creamy. Beat in the chocolate and the eggs until combined, then stir in the flour and baking powder, cocoa powder, milk and food colouring. Spoon the mixture evenly between the cupcake cases, levelling the tops.

Next, bake them for 20 mins or until the cakes are risen and springy to the touch. Cool for 5 mins in the tin, then lift out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

To make the buttercream, beat the butter until soft, then stir in the icing sugar a little at a time. Beat in the vanilla and some black food colouring, then transfer to a piping bag fitted with a plain nozzle. Let the kids decorate them how they wish!

Are you ready for some Halloween fun…?

Spend a spooky evening telling scary stories around the fireplace with the help of these Halloween stick puppets!

Simply use lollipop sticks and let the kids paint their favourite Halloween characters onto them. Then the rest is up to their imagination!
